Bitcoin Holds Above $63,000 After Securing 7.5% Gain in July

Bitcoin started August with a slight decline, trading just above $63,000, but successfully closed out July with a 7.5% gain. The cryptocurrency demonstrated resilience despite a challenging macroeconomic environment marked by rising bond yields and concerns over potential Federal Reserve interest rate hikes.
As of early Saturday trading, Bitcoin was down approximately 1.3% over the preceding 24 hours, with its price at $63,104.1 at 04:51 ET, according to Investing.com data. Analysts expect trading to remain volatile in August as investors assess upcoming U.S. employment data, Federal Reserve policy, and institutional flows into spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
Hardware Wallet Exploit Creates New Headwind
A significant new pressure point for the market emerged with the disclosure of a major exploit targeting Coldcard hardware wallets, raising fresh concerns about the security of self-custody solutions.
According to a report from Galaxy Research, an attacker successfully removed 1,082.65 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $70 million, from 1,196 wallets on July 30. The theft was reportedly enabled by a firmware flaw that allowed the attacker to recreate private keys offline, potentially weighing on prices if the stolen funds are liquidated.
AdMarket Structure and Institutional Activity
Despite recent price weakness, the market structure appears less leveraged than in previous downturns. Analysts at Bitfinex noted that derivatives positions were cleared during a late-June sell-off, reducing the amount of forced selling when broader risk appetite wanes. Average daily crypto liquidations have since remained below their typical 2026 range.
Institutional demand remains a key factor for price support, though sustained spot ETF inflows have yet to emerge. In a related development, stablecoin issuer Tether reported adding 1,796 BTC to its reserves in the second quarter, bringing its total holdings to 98,933 BTC. However, the company's excess reserve buffer declined by half to $4.11 billion.
