Background

Bitcoin (BTC) fell more than 2% on Wednesday, slipping below the $63,000 level as an escalation in U.S.-Iran military tensions soured risk appetite. The decline was compounded by the release of Federal Reserve meeting minutes that signaled deep uncertainty among policymakers regarding the future of interest rates.

Geopolitical Tensions Drive Risk-Off Sentiment

Investor sentiment toward risk assets deteriorated after the U.S. military launched strikes against Iran in retaliation for attacks on commercial oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded with strikes of its own, according to reports.

Speaking at a NATO summit, President Donald Trump stated a recent ceasefire was now "over" and warned of further military action. The heightened conflict immediately impacted commodity markets, with Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, surging above $80 a barrel. This move reflects a broader flight from speculative assets as investors reposition for heightened geopolitical risk.

Fed Minutes Reveal Policy Division

Adding to market headwinds, minutes from the Federal Reserve’s June 16-17 meeting revealed an "evenly divided debate" over the monetary policy outlook. Policymakers noted "high uncertainty" and acknowledged that inflation could remain elevated due to factors including the Middle East conflict.

The minutes said that in such a scenario, "some policy firming would likely be warranted." The prospect of a higher interest rate environment typically weighs on non-yielding, speculative assets such as cryptocurrencies, as it increases the opportunity cost of holding them.

Crypto Market Impact

By late Wednesday trading, Bitcoin was down 2.1% at approximately $62,115.3, after trading above $64,600 earlier in the week. Other major digital assets followed suit:

  • Ethereum (ETH): Lost 2.1% to trade at $1,735.98.
  • XRP: Declined 2.2% to $1.0888.
  • Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA): Both shed 4.5%.

Despite the negative price action, data from SoSoValue showed that U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a third consecutive day of net inflows. This suggests some institutional demand remains resilient, although overall weekly flows for the products were still negative following heavy outflows in previous sessions.
