Bitcoin Edges Up to $63,500 as Investors Eye U.S. Regulatory Meetings, Geopolitical Risks

Bitcoin edged higher on Monday but remained confined to a narrow trading range, as investors adopted a cautious stance amid escalating geopolitical tensions involving Iran and uncertainty surrounding upcoming U.S. regulatory meetings.
The world's largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization was up 0.7% to $63,497.5 as of 9:24 AM ET, following a nearly 3% decline last week. The muted price action reflects broader risk-off sentiment in markets.
Regulatory and Geopolitical Headwinds
Investor appetite for speculative assets like Bitcoin has been dampened by rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, which has pushed oil prices higher and increased market volatility.
Adding to the uncertainty, the crypto market is focused on a series of high-level meetings in Washington D.C. this week. According to a report from Coindesk, President Donald Trump is expected to attend a meeting of the government's new innovation committee on Wednesday, which will include leaders from the crypto, traditional finance, and AI sectors. This will be followed by a separate meeting at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Thursday, where further discussions on crypto regulation are anticipated.
ETF Outflows Signal Investor Caution
Recent fund flows indicate a cooling of institutional interest. Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) experienced significant withdrawals last week, weighing on the asset's price.
Ad- Data from analytics platform SoSoValue shows that spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows of nearly $390 million last week.
- This represents the largest single week of outflows since early July and coincided with Bitcoin's price decline.
The cryptocurrency market's performance stood in contrast to U.S. tech and AI-related stocks, which rallied last week on the back of strong earnings from chipmakers.
MicroStrategy Sells Stock, Altcoins Mixed
In corporate news, major Bitcoin holder MicroStrategy sold approximately $333.7 million of its own MSTR stock between August 10 and August 16, according to a Monday filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The filing confirmed the company made no sales of its underlying crypto assets, with its holdings steady at 840,447 BTC.
The proceeds from the stock sale were allocated to paying dividends, repurchasing securities, and increasing its cash reserves. MicroStrategy's average purchase price for its Bitcoin is $75,385 per coin.
Elsewhere in the crypto market, performance was mixed after last week's broad losses. Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, rose 0.8% to $1,897.0. However, XRP, BNB, and Cardano saw minor declines, while Solana and Dogecoin traded flat.
