Bitcoin Climbs Past $79,000 Amid ETF Interest, But Fed Rate Hike Fears Persist

Summary
Bitcoin's price recovered on Wednesday, buoyed by renewed investor interest in crypto ETPs, but concerns over a potential Federal Reserve rate hike and rising oil prices limited further advances.
Bitcoin rebounded above the $79,000 level on Wednesday, recovering from a decline in the previous session as renewed investor interest in cryptocurrency exchange-traded products provided a tailwind. However, persistent macroeconomic pressures, including concerns over a potential Federal Reserve rate hike and surging oil prices, capped the digital asset's gains.
As of 9:47 AM ET, Bitcoin (BTC) was trading at $79,390.2, an increase of 1.7% for the day, according to data from Investing.com. The move marks a recovery from a low near $77,600 on Tuesday. The leading cryptocurrency had previously surpassed $82,000 last week before retreating on the back of stronger-than-expected U.S. employment data.
ETP Inflows Provide Support
A key factor supporting the crypto market was strong performance in related exchange-traded products. Notably, the Grayscale Zcash ETF, which began trading on the NYSE Arca on August 25, has attracted significant capital.
In approximately two weeks since its debut, the fund's assets under management have surpassed $500 million. As the first exchange-traded product to offer direct spot exposure to Zcash, its launch has broadened the channels for institutional investors to access the token, signaling healthy demand for regulated crypto investment vehicles.
Macro Headwinds Mount
AdDespite the positive sentiment from ETPs, broader economic risks are weighing on the market. Traders have increased their bets that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates at its upcoming meeting on September 15-16, following robust U.S. jobs figures and resurgent inflation concerns.
- UBS on Monday forecast two 25-basis-point rate hikes from the Fed this year, one in September and another in December.
- The market is currently pricing in an approximately 58% probability of a rate hike in September.
Adding to inflationary pressures, oil prices continued their ascent, with Brent crude reaching $99.68 a barrel on Wednesday, its highest level since late June. Rising energy costs complicate the outlook for central banks, increasing the risk of persistent inflation just as policymakers weigh further monetary tightening. Investors are now closely watching for U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) data on Thursday and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) on Friday for further clues on the Fed's path forward.
For Bitcoin and other risk assets, higher interest rates typically dampen demand by increasing the relative appeal of fixed-income investments. This dynamic continues to create resistance for the cryptocurrency, preventing a sustained break above its recent highs.
