Background

The foreign exchange market is bracing for potential short-term price action as several large option contracts, with notional values in the billions of dollars, are set to expire on Wednesday across major currency pairs.

Key Expiries on Wednesday

Data from the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) highlights significant concentrations of open interest at specific strike prices. These expiries could act as a magnet for spot prices throughout the trading session.

Key contracts scheduled for expiration include:

  • EUR/USD: €1.88 billion at the 1.1400 strike, €1.33 billion at 1.1500, and €960 million at 1.1750.
  • USD/JPY: $1.12 billion at 164.50, $1.05 billion at 160.00, and $949.6 million at 163.50.
  • GBP/USD: A notable £1.37 billion at the 1.3350 strike.
  • USD/CAD: $731.4 million at 1.4250 and $594.3 million at 1.4100.

Other pairs with notable expiries include AUD/USD, USD/CNY, and NZD/USD, according to the DTCC data.

Market Implications

Large option expiries can exert a significant, temporary influence on spot currency prices, a phenomenon known as pin risk. As the expiration time approaches, the price of the underlying currency pair may be drawn toward strike prices with high open interest, potentially suppressing volatility in the immediate vicinity of that level.

Conversely, once the options expire and this gravitational pull is removed, the market can experience a release of pent-up price movement. Traders will be closely monitoring whether these currency pairs gravitate towards or react away from these key levels during Wednesday's session.

Upcoming Expiries to Watch

Beyond Wednesday, the market is also tracking other substantial expiries scheduled for later in the week and into the next. These could continue to influence sentiment and trading activity.

Notably, a USD/JPY expiry for $3.42 billion is scheduled for July 13 at the 160.50 strike. For EUR/USD, an additional €1.63 billion is set to expire at the 1.1300 strike on July 10.
