Background

The Baltic Dry Index, a key global benchmark for shipping costs of raw materials, rose on Friday to cap a strong weekly performance, primarily fueled by higher freight rates for capesize vessels.

Index Performance Details

The main index, which tracks rates for capesize, panamax, and supramax ships, gained 34 points, or 1.2%, to settle at 2,944, according to data from the Baltic Exchange. This daily advance secured a weekly gain of 8.4% for the closely watched economic indicator.

Capesize Strength Drives Gains

The primary driver for the index's upward momentum was the capesize segment, which typically transports large cargoes of iron ore and coal.

  • The capesize index climbed 86 points, or 1.9%, to reach 4,655.
  • This contributed to a robust weekly gain of approximately 13.5% for the segment.
  • Average daily earnings for these vessels increased by $780 to $38,711.

Market Context

Market reports indicated that the strength in capesize rates was underpinned by a rise in iron ore futures. This was attributed to a combination of factors, including seasonally lower shipments from Australia and inventory destocking at major Chinese ports.

In contrast, the panamax index was little changed on Friday, closing at 2,253. Despite the flat daily performance, the index still managed to post a 2.3% gain for the week.
