Baltic Dry Index Ends Week 8.4% Higher on Strong Capesize Demand

The Baltic Dry Index, a key measure of global shipping costs for raw materials, advanced on Friday to cap a strong weekly performance, driven primarily by a surge in freight rates for capesize ships.
Key Index Movements
According to data from the Baltic Exchange, the main composite index, which tracks rates for capesize, panamax, and supramax vessels, saw the following movements:
- The main index gained 34 points, or 1.2%, to close at 2,944 on Friday, contributing to a weekly gain of 8.4%.
- The capesize index led the charge, rising 86 points, or 1.9%, to 4,655. For the week, it posted a significant gain of approximately 13.5%.
- The panamax index was little changed on the day, finishing at 2,253, but it secured a 2.3% increase over the week.
AdMarket Drivers
The rally was overwhelmingly supported by the strength in the capesize segment. Average daily earnings for these large vessels, which typically transport 150,000-ton cargoes of commodities like iron ore and coal, increased by $780 to $38,711.
This rise in shipping rates coincided with gains in iron ore futures, which were reportedly supported by factors including seasonally lower shipments from Australia and destocking at major Chinese ports. As a leading economic indicator, the Baltic Dry Index's performance is closely watched for signals about global trade flows and industrial demand.
