Baltic Dry Index Edges Higher on Stronger Capesize Rates

The Baltic Exchange's main dry bulk sea freight index posted a modest gain on Thursday, supported by a continued strengthening in rates for the larger Capesize vessel segment.
Index Performance
The overall index, a key barometer for global economic health that tracks freight costs for dry bulk commodities, rose by 9 points, or 0.3%, to 3,336, according to data from the Baltic Exchange.
Performance across vessel segments was mixed:
- The Capesize index gained 44 points, or 0.8%, to reach 5,656.
- The Panamax index declined, falling 43 points, or 1.8%, to 2,282.
AdMarket Drivers
The uptick in the main index was driven entirely by the Capesize segment, where average daily earnings for vessels—which typically transport 150,000-tonne cargoes of iron ore and coal—increased by $396 to $47,793.
Support for Capesize rates came as iron ore prices rose for a second straight session. The source noted this was linked to increased seaborne purchases by Chinese steelmakers ahead of a national public holiday. However, persistent weakness in steel profit margins is raising concerns among market participants about the sustainability of future raw material demand.
