Baltic Dry Index Dips as Capesize Rates Weaken

Summary

The Baltic Exchange's main dry bulk freight index edged lower on Wednesday, influenced by a downturn in rates for larger capesize vessels. The decline in the main index occurred despite gains in the panamax vessel segment.

Background

The Baltic Exchange's primary sea freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, experienced a slight decline on Wednesday. The overall index, a composite of capesize, panamax, and supramax vessel rates, fell by 4 points, or approximately 0.1%, to close at 2,871.

The main driver of the dip was weakness in the capesize segment. The capesize index dropped 34 points, a 0.8% decrease, to 4,480. Consequently, average daily earnings for these large vessels, which typically transport 150,000-ton cargoes like iron ore and coal, fell by $310 to $37,130.

In contrast to the capesize market, the panamax index showed positive movement. It gained 15 points, or 0.7%, to reach 2,245. Average daily earnings for panamax ships, which usually carry 60,000 to 70,000 tons of cargo such as coal or grain, increased by $140 to $20,209.
