Background

Axiom Biosciences plans to pursue a primary listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) in 2027, a move that would make it the first U.S. biotech company to do so. The decision to go public is driven by strong clinical trial results and the need for significant capital to expand its lead drug program, CEO Dr. Remo Moomiaie-Qajar told Investing.com.

Strategic Rationale for Hong Kong Listing

The choice of Hong Kong over a traditional U.S. listing reflects Axiom's strategic focus on Asia, where it has established key partnerships and initiatives. "We have strategically selected a Hong Kong listing as our initial step, leveraging our established initiatives and partner relationships across Asia," Moomiaie-Qajar stated. The company's sole announced partnership in the region is with South Korea's Medinno Inc.

Axiom also intends to pursue a secondary listing in the U.S. at a later date to diversify its investor base. Moomiaie-Qajar explained that the company opted for an IPO over another private venture round to accelerate its growth following successful trials in two rare pediatric indications.

IPO to Fund Clinical Expansion

The initial public offering is reportedly targeting between $150 million and $200 million, although the CEO declined to confirm these figures, calling the target valuation and proceeds "speculative at this stage." Capital raised from the listing is earmarked for advancing Axiom's lead assets through clinical development and toward a potential Biologics License Application (BLA) submission.

The company requires substantial funding on an expedited timeline to expand its lead program into much larger adult indications, including ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. “Entering the public markets now positions us to strategically expand our clinical pipeline and fund the clinical entry of our deep preclinical portfolio,” Moomiaie-Qajar commented.

A Potential Precedent for US Biotechs

Axiom's planned 2027 IPO is subject to regulatory review. Ahead of the listing, the company intends to achieve key regulatory milestones and advance its lead assets into the next phases of clinical development.

A successful debut on the HKEX could set a new precedent for American biotech firms seeking capital. Moomiaie-Qajar suggested the move could serve as "a case study for Hong Kong's ability to attract U.S. companies to list there," potentially encouraging others to rethink traditional financing routes.
