Background

Asian stocks were mixed on Tuesday, with a rebound in artificial intelligence shares providing support while persistent concerns over rising oil prices, higher bond yields, and an impending U.S. Federal Reserve interest rate decision capped investor enthusiasm.

AI Shares Lead Tech Rebound

Technology stocks across Asia saw a partial recovery following a selloff on Monday. The rebound was led by the artificial intelligence sector as investors reassessed the impact of recent calls from industry leaders for a slower pace of development and additional safeguards. Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.8% and South Korea’s KOSPI rose 0.19%, buoyed by gains in major semiconductor firms.

Key regional technology and e-commerce movers included:

  • SK Hynix: +1.62%
  • Samsung Electronics: +0.9%
  • Tencent: +2.9%
  • Alibaba: +2.1%

According to a note from OCBC, the bank's wealth advisory unit remains "moderately positive on equities," viewing the long-term AI-driven bull market as intact.

Macroeconomic Headwinds Cap Gains

Despite the tech recovery, broader market sentiment remained cautious due to several macroeconomic pressures. These headwinds are increasing borrowing costs for corporations and weighing on equity valuations ahead of key central bank decisions this week from the U.S., UK, and Japan.

Investors are closely monitoring elevated oil prices, with crude trading above $107 a barrel, which is fueling global inflation concerns. Concurrently, rising government bond yields, driven by widening fiscal deficits and heavy debt issuance, are putting downward pressure on stock prices by reducing the present value of future corporate earnings.

Markets are pricing in a more than 90% probability of an interest rate hike at the Federal Reserve's meeting on Wednesday, according to Investing.com data. The persistent inflation picture, exacerbated by energy costs, leaves policymakers with little room for a dovish pivot.

Regional Market Snapshot

The mixed sentiment was reflected across the region's major exchanges, with the MSCI Asia Pacific index remaining broadly steady. While markets in Japan and South Korea posted gains, others declined, with Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 falling 0.9% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index dropping 0.5%.

In mainland China, the CSI 300 and Shanghai Composite indexes each edged up 0.1%. August data has pointed to an uneven economic recovery, with resilient industrial activity contrasting with weaker consumer spending and investment.
