Asian Stocks Decline as Oil Spike and Rate Hike Jitters Weigh on Markets

Asian share markets slid on Monday as a sharp rise in oil prices due to supply disruptions stoked inflation fears. Investors also adopted a cautious stance ahead of potential interest rate hikes from central banks in both the United States and Japan this week, according to a report from Reuters.
Oil Prices Surge on Supply Fears
Geopolitical tensions pressured energy markets after new strikes on Saudi Arabia and ships in the Gulf threatened global supply. According to the report, a meeting between Iran and Gulf Arab states intended to discuss the Strait of Hormuz was postponed, adding to market uncertainty.
The supply concerns pushed oil benchmarks higher, fueling worries about persistent global inflation.
- Brent crude futures climbed 3.1% to $107.84 a barrel.
- U.S. crude rose 2.8% to $102.85 a barrel.
Central Bank Decisions Loom
AdInvestor focus is firmly on upcoming central bank meetings. Following a higher-than-expected U.S. consumer price report on Friday, markets are now pricing in an 86% probability that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates by 25 basis points on Wednesday. This would mark the first rate increase since mid-2023.
"We now expect the Fed to hike twice this year, in September and December," said Michael Feroli, chief U.S. economist at JPMorgan, in a note. He added that failing to act could risk the central bank's credibility. Markets also imply a 76% chance the Bank of Japan will lift its key rate by a quarter point to 1.25% when it meets on Friday.
Market Reaction and Outlook
The combination of higher energy costs and rising borrowing costs weighed on equity valuations. In early trading, S&P 500 futures lost 0.5%, while Nasdaq futures fell 1.0%. Nikkei futures were down 2%.
The move away from risk assets came as government bond yields remained elevated after a sharp sell-off last week. The higher yields also diminished the appeal of non-interest-bearing assets, with gold slipping 0.3% to $4,336 an ounce. Despite the short-term pressure, some analysts see resilience. "Equities typically struggle when the Fed starts to hike rates, but we expect the bull market to continue," noted Ben Snider, chief U.S. equity strategist at Goldman Sachs.
