Apple Stock Surges on Foldable iPhone Duo Unveiling, Defying Market Sell-Off

Apple Inc. (AAPL) stock rallied on Thursday, closing up 3.58% to $326.63 and significantly outpacing the broader market, as investors and analysts reacted positively to the company's new foldable smartphone.
The gains followed Apple's "Surprise and Shine" event, where it unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first entry into the foldable device category.
iPhone Duo Drives Optimism
The centerpiece of the event was the $1,999 iPhone Duo, which represents the most significant change to the iPhone's physical design in nearly two decades. The launch is also the first major product introduction under incoming CEO John Ternus. The device features Apple's proprietary A20 Pro chip and a new in-house C2 modem.
Apple announced that the iPhone Duo will be available for pre-order starting October 16 and will arrive in stores on October 23. Investor attention is now shifting toward early demand signals and sales data for the premium-priced device.
Wall Street Weighs In
The stock's move was fueled by largely bullish sentiment from Wall Street analysts, who see the new product as a major growth catalyst.
Ad- Citi maintained a Buy rating and a $365 price target, calling the Duo the most significant new hardware category for Apple since the Apple Watch and AirPods.
- Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan noted the foldable form factor opens a "meaningfully larger addressable market" for the company.
- Evercore ISI predicted that Apple would sell out every unit it can produce within the first six months.
However, not all commentary was positive. Jefferies reiterated an Underperform rating, suggesting Apple may be prioritizing sales volume over immediate profitability. Lynx Equity downgraded the stock, citing potential supply chain constraints for memory and flash components heading into fiscal 2027.
Market Headwinds
Apple's strong performance was particularly notable given the negative sentiment in the wider market. The rally occurred while major indices were in decline, with the S&P 500 falling 0.58% and the NASDAQ Composite shedding 0.65%.
While competitors like Huawei and Xiaomi have already launched foldable devices, the market appeared to view Apple's deep integration of hardware and software as a key competitive advantage. The combination of a landmark product launch and favorable analyst reviews allowed the tech giant to defy the market's downward trend.
