Antares Nuclear Secures $470 Million to Develop Microreactors for US Military

Summary
Nuclear startup Antares Nuclear has raised $470 million in a funding round co-led by Paradigm and Caffeinated Capital to develop and deploy microreactors for U.S. military installations by 2028.
Nuclear energy startup Antares Nuclear Inc. has secured $470 million in a new financing round to advance its development of microreactors intended to power U.S. military bases, the company announced in a statement on Monday.
Funding Details
The financing was co-led by venture capital firms Paradigm and Caffeinated Capital. The total amount comprises $370 million in equity and $100 million in debt. Antares stated the capital is intended to support the deployment of its first systems to U.S. military installations, setting a target of 2028 for initial operation.
Technological Milestone and Outlook
The investment follows a key technical achievement for the company. On June 4, Antares became the first participant in a U.S. Energy Department program to successfully demonstrate a self-sustaining fission reaction, a critical step in reactor design. The company noted that this test produced a small amount of energy and that it does not expect to have a system capable of generating electricity until next year.
AdAntares' microreactors are being designed to operate safely and autonomously for years without the need for refueling. The company has secured firm contracts to build these reactors for the military as part of the Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations initiative.
Market Context
Founded in 2023, Antares is part of a growing field of startups focused on advanced nuclear power. The significant venture capital interest underscores a push for innovative energy solutions for critical national security infrastructure. However, while the concept of microreactors is gaining traction, the technology remains unproven at a commercial scale, and no such reactors are currently in service in the U.S.
