Background

Shares of AngloGold Ashanti (AU) fell sharply in morning trading, declining 4.4% after BMO Capital downgraded the stock on valuation grounds. The move comes amid broader pressure on gold mining equities and a risk-off sentiment across U.S. markets.

BMO Cites Valuation Concerns

BMO Capital lowered its rating on AngloGold Ashanti to Market Perform from a previous Outperform, according to a note cited by Investing.com. The firm maintained its price target of $115 per share.

The downgrade was attributed to the stock's valuation, with analysts noting that the shares now trade at a "meaningful premium to net asset value" following a period of exceptional relative outperformance over the past year. BMO concluded this premium is no longer justified at current levels.

Analysts also noted that the company's $2.0 billion share buyback program is expected to be deployed selectively, which could limit near-term price support. Despite the downgrade, BMO acknowledged that AngloGold's near-term operations remain steady and that its Arthur growth project offers solid long-term potential.

Broader Market and Sector Pressures

The stock-specific news was compounded by unfavorable market conditions. Gold mining stocks faced a sector-level headwind as the price of gold bullion cooled from a recent rally. Gold futures were down over 1.1% during the session.

A broader sell-off in U.S. equities also weighed on the stock, with the S&P 500, Dow Jones, and Nasdaq all trading lower. Investors have been unsettled by persistently elevated Treasury yields and oil prices trading above $100 per barrel ahead of key inflation data and the Federal Reserve's meeting next week.

Recent Performance Context

The downgrade follows the company's mixed second-quarter results for 2026. AngloGold Ashanti reported earnings per share of $1.96, which missed the Wall Street consensus of $2.04. Revenue of $3.1 billion also fell short of the $3.3 billion estimate. However, the company did report meaningful improvements in free cash flow and EBITDA for the quarter.
