Background

Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN) and AstraZeneca (LON:AZN) on Tuesday announced positive results from a late-stage clinical trial for a combination drug treatment targeting extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer. The study showed that the therapy improved survival rates for patients, a significant development for the two pharmaceutical giants.

Key Trial Findings

The trial evaluated Amgen's Imdelltra used in conjunction with AstraZeneca’s Imfinzi as a maintenance treatment. This combination was compared against a regimen of Imfinzi used alone in patients whose disease had not progressed after receiving standard initial therapy.

According to the companies' announcement, the combination treatment demonstrated a statistically significant improvement across several key endpoints:

  • Overall survival
  • Progression-free survival
  • Objective response rate

The companies also reported that no new safety concerns were identified during the trial, reinforcing the combination's favorable risk-benefit profile.

Commercial and Strategic Context

Imdelltra is a key oncology asset for Amgen. The drug, which belongs to a class of treatments known as bispecific antibodies that help the body's immune system fight cancer, received accelerated approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2024, followed by a traditional approval in 2025.

The drug is already a significant revenue contributor, generating $513 million in sales for Amgen last year. The oncology portfolio is a cornerstone of Amgen's business, accounting for approximately 23% of the company's total revenue. These positive trial results could further solidify Imdelltra's position in the competitive lung cancer treatment landscape.
