Amazon Signs Landmark National Workers' Rights Deal with Italian Unions

Amazon has signed a comprehensive agreement with major Italian unions covering workers' rights, a move hailed by labor groups as a first-of-its-kind national deal for the e-commerce giant. The accord, announced Wednesday, sets new standards for video surveillance, parental leave, and other employee rights across its Italian logistics and transport operations.
Key Provisions of the Accord
The agreement was reached with the Filt CGIL, Fit CISL, and Uiltrasporti unions and covers 57 Amazon sites in Italy, according to a joint statement. The deal introduces significant new terms for workplace conditions.
Key points of the agreement include:
- Video Surveillance: It has been agreed that video surveillance images cannot be used for disciplinary purposes.
- Parental Leave: Employees have been granted the right to take parental leave in highly flexible increments, as small as a single hour.
AdA 'First' for Amazon Labor Relations
The unions described the deal as the first national collective agreement of this nature that Amazon has signed in any country, marking a potential milestone in the company's relationship with organized labor. The accord builds on an initial protocol that the parties signed in 2021.
Amazon confirmed the agreement in a statement reported by Reuters. "We welcome the agreement reached with the trade unions, which introduces new tools for flexibility and work-life balance and enhances existing ones," the company said. This development could signal a new phase of engagement between the U.S. technology firm and labor representatives in Europe.
