AI Startup DeepSeek Taps Venture Capital Partner as CFO in Pre-IPO Move

Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek plans to appoint Yan Wentao, a partner at venture-capital firm GL Ventures, as its first chief financial officer, according to two people with knowledge of the matter. The strategic hire signals the company is building out its corporate structure ahead of a potential initial public offering (IPO).
Strategic Hire Signals IPO Ambitions
The appointment of a CFO with dealmaking experience is a critical step for a company preparing to go public. A CFO typically manages investor communications, financial controls, and the disclosure processes required for a listing. Yan's recruitment would mark a significant move for DeepSeek, transitioning it from a research-focused lab into a more conventional corporation.
Yan is a partner at GL Ventures, the venture-capital arm of prominent investment firm Hillhouse Investment. According to the publication Zero2IPO, his representative investments include AI developer MiniMax, a rival to DeepSeek. Hillhouse is not currently an investor in DeepSeek, the sources noted. The sources were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. DeepSeek and Hillhouse did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Path to Public Markets
AdThis development follows a recent Reuters report that Hangzhou-based DeepSeek had hired Chinese brokerage CITIC Securities to prepare for a possible listing on Shanghai’s technology-focused STAR Market. The move to install a formal C-suite underscores its evolution from a startup financed internally by its founder's quantitative hedge fund, High-Flyer, to an entity preparing for the scrutiny of public markets.
Rapid Fundraising and Growth
DeepSeek has been raising capital at a rapid pace amid a global race for AI dominance. In June, the company raised approximately $7.4 billion at a post-money valuation of more than $50 billion, according to Reuters. A separate Reuters report in July stated the company was in an ongoing fundraising round that values it at about 500 billion yuan (approximately $74 billion).
Founded in 2023, DeepSeek gained global attention for releasing low-cost AI models, and it has been increasing its spending on computing infrastructure, chip development, and talent acquisition.
