AEX Index Gains 0.36% to Reach One-Month High on Energy Sector Strength

Summary
The Dutch AEX index closed higher on Monday, reaching a one-month peak as strong performance in the oil and gas sector, led by Shell and SBM Offshore, offset losses elsewhere. The benchmark index rose 0.36% amid a broader rise in crude oil prices.
Dutch equities advanced on Monday, with the benchmark AEX index climbing 0.36% to close at a new one-month high. The gains were primarily driven by strength in the energy, healthcare, and technology sectors, according to data from Investing.com.
Key Movers on the AEX
Leading the gains on the index were companies with significant exposure to the energy markets, several of which reached new milestones.
- SBM Offshore NV (AS:SBMO): Surged 2.94% to close at 37.06, a new all-time high.
- Shell PLC (AS:SHEL): Gained 1.58% to end at 42.73, also marking an all-time high.
- Koninklijke Ahold Delhaize NV (AS:AD): Added 1.86% to finish the session at 32.35.
Despite the index's positive close, several major stocks posted losses. The session's worst performers included BE Semiconductor Industries NV (AS:BESI), which fell 1.73%, and Wolters Kluwer (AS:WLSNc), down 1.72%.
AdMarket breadth on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange was negative, with 52 stocks falling compared to 42 advancers, while 9 remained unchanged. This suggests the index's advance was driven by a narrow group of large-capitalization stocks.
Oil Rallies, Volatility Holds Steady
The positive performance in the energy sector coincided with a significant rise in oil prices. Crude oil for November delivery increased by 2.36% to $94.59 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 2.09% to $99.48 a barrel.
In other markets, gold futures for December delivery saw a sharp decline of 3.84%. Meanwhile, the AEX Volatility index, a measure of implied market volatility, was unchanged at 21.09, suggesting stable investor sentiment despite the mixed trading.
