Background

Shares of Aena SME SA (AENA) declined on Wednesday after the airport operator's nine-month revenue missed analyst expectations, raising investor concerns despite a healthy rise in net profit and robust passenger traffic.

The stock fell by as much as 1.8% to trade at €26.52 after the report was published.

Revenue Miss Overshadows Strong Traffic

Aena reported revenue of €5.28 billion for the first nine months of 2026. While this marked a 10% year-over-year increase, it fell significantly short of the analyst consensus estimate of €5.69 billion, triggering selling pressure.

In contrast, the company's net profit rose 12% year-over-year to €1.77 billion, a figure that broadly met market expectations. However, investors focused on the top-line miss, which occurred despite strong operational performance.

Aena's Spanish airports handled 257.2 million passengers during the period, a 4.1% increase that surpassed the company's own upgraded full-year growth forecast of 3%. This disconnect between strong passenger footfall and the revenue shortfall suggests investor concern that commercial and aeronautical yields are not keeping pace with traffic growth.

Analyst Caution and Market Headwinds

The negative sentiment was compounded by pre-existing caution from analysts. Ahead of the earnings release, UBS had trimmed its price target on Aena, citing a higher capital expenditure plan that is expected to push the company's net debt materially higher through the end of the decade.

Aena's stock also faced headwinds from a broader risk-off mood in European markets. Spain’s Ibex 35 index fell roughly 1% as investors were reluctant to add risk exposure ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s upcoming interest rate decision, weighing on infrastructure and transport stocks across the continent.
