Aena Q2 Earnings Align With Forecasts as Rising Costs and Geopolitical Risks Cloud Outlook

Summary
Spanish airport operator Aena reported second-quarter EBITDA in line with analyst estimates, supported by strong commercial and real estate revenue, but faces headwinds from rising operating expenses and market uncertainty.
Spanish airport operator Aena S.M.E., S.A. reported second-quarter 2026 financial results that met analyst expectations, though the company cautioned about limited visibility for the second half of the year due to geopolitical uncertainty and rising costs.
Second-Quarter Performance
Group earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) came in at €1,146 million, just 0.8% below analyst consensus, according to the company's report. The result was bolstered by strong performance in non-aeronautical segments.
Key revenue figures relative to analyst forecasts include:
- Commercial revenue: Exceeded forecasts by 1.5%.
- Real estate revenue: Surpassed estimates by a significant 17.0%.
- International operations: Came in 2.1% below expectations.
- Aeronautical revenue: Matched analyst predictions.
Aena also reported that variable retail rents per passenger grew 3.9% year-over-year in the second quarter, an acceleration from the 1.9% growth posted in the first quarter of 2026.
Operating Costs and Guidance
AdOperating expenses for Aena's Spanish network, excluding certain items like taxes and electricity, rose 13% year-over-year, an increase the company attributed primarily to higher staff costs. This growth rate represents a slight moderation from the 15% increase seen in the first quarter.
For the full year, Aena maintained its 2026 traffic growth guidance at approximately 3%, which aligns with analyst consensus. The operator noted that Spain has benefited from traffic diverted from other regions following the Strait of Hormuz crisis, as well as from some passengers switching from rail to air travel.
Headwinds and Market Uncertainty
Despite the stable guidance, Aena's management highlighted several risks that create limited visibility for the rest of the year. The company cited uncertainty surrounding the Middle East conflict and the impact of fuel hedge roll-offs as key concerns.
Furthermore, the operator observed a weakening in load factors, which has caused passenger traffic growth to lag behind the expansion in airline capacity. The company also confirmed its DORA infrastructure investment plan is progressing toward its September deadline.
