AAR Corp Stock Falls as Margin Miss Overshadows Earnings Beat

Summary
Shares of the aviation services company declined in after-hours trading despite beating Q4 revenue and profit estimates, as investors focused on contracting operating margins and rising integration costs.
AAR Corp. (NYSE: AIR) shares fell nearly 6% in after-hours trading Tuesday after the company's fourth-quarter earnings report revealed a significant miss on profitability, overshadowing revenue and earnings figures that surpassed analyst expectations.
A Mixed Earnings Report
The aviation aftermarket services provider reported strong top-line growth for its fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026. Revenue grew 23% year-over-year to $928 million, beating the consensus estimate of approximately $892 million. Adjusted diluted earnings per share came in at $1.53, also ahead of the analyst forecast of around $1.38.
Despite these headline beats, investor focus shifted to the company's contracting profitability. AAR's GAAP operating margin fell to 8.6% for the quarter, down from 9.7% in the same period last year. This figure fell well short of the 10.2% to 10.5% guidance range management had provided in the previous quarter, signaling a negative surprise for the market.
Cost Pressures and Integration Drag
The margin compression was driven by a sharp increase in operating expenses. According to the report, selling, general, and administrative (SG&A) expenses rose to $99.6 million from $77.4 million in the prior-year quarter.
AdFurthermore, costs related to recent acquisitions weighed on results. Acquisition, amortization, and integration expenses surged to $11.3 million, a substantial increase from just $0.3 million a year earlier, reflecting the financial burden of integrating new business operations.
Market Context and Investor Reaction
The negative after-hours reaction occurred with the stock trading near its 52-week high of $146.75, leaving little room for disappointment. Analyst sentiment was also mixed heading into the release, with RBC Capital having recently raised its price target while KeyBanc downgraded the stock to Sector Weight in late June, citing valuation concerns.
With the broader S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices finishing the regular session flat, there was no market-wide momentum to cushion the blow. Investors appeared to seize on the missed margin guidance and rising costs, choosing to sell the news despite the company's continued strong revenue performance.
