Xiaomi Launches SkyNomad SUV to Target Family Segment Amid Sales Pressure

Summary
Chinese tech firm Xiaomi has launched its SkyNomad SUV series, an extended-range electric vehicle aimed at the family market, as it seeks to boost deliveries in China's competitive auto sector.
Chinese technology firm Xiaomi on Thursday launched its SkyNomad sport utility vehicle (SUV) series, expanding its electric vehicle lineup into the competitive family segment. The move, reported by Reuters, is aimed at boosting vehicle deliveries amid slowing sales and intense competition in the world's largest auto market.
New Model Targets Family Segment
Xiaomi is positioning the SkyNomad as an "intelligent, reconfigurable, large-space SUV," a strategic shift from its performance-focused SU7 sedan and YU7 SUV models. The flagship seven-seat N90 Max was described by CEO Lei Jun during the launch event as "a house you can move," highlighting its focus on adaptable interior space for large families.
The SkyNomad line utilizes extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) technology. The N90 Max combines a 76-kilowatt-hour battery with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that acts as a generator, giving it a total combined range of up to 1,705 km (1,059 miles), according to the company. The vehicle is priced at 299,900 yuan ($44,397).
Market Context and Rationale
AdThe expansion into the family SUV market is a critical effort to accelerate sales after a challenging start to the year. According to the report, Xiaomi's EV sales in the first half of the year reached only about one-third of its annual target. The launch comes as China's auto market faces headwinds from softening consumer demand and a sluggish economy.
For Xiaomi, which diversified from smartphones and home appliances into vehicles, the EV business has become an increasingly important revenue stream. This new model represents a direct push to capture a larger share of the popular and lucrative family SUV segment.
Timeline and European Plans
Xiaomi announced that pre-orders for the SkyNomad series would begin immediately, with the vehicles scheduled to be delivered to customers in September. The company also confirmed it is planning a European launch for its vehicles next year, signaling its broader global ambitions in the automotive sector.
