Background

Whirlpool (NYSE: WHR) shares plunged in after-hours trading Thursday after the appliance manufacturer reported a significant third-quarter earnings miss and slashed its full-year guidance, flipping its profit outlook to a substantial loss. The stock fell 8.7% following the release, hitting a new 52-week low and extending a year-to-date decline that now exceeds 60%.

Third-Quarter Results Miss Estimates

The company's results for the third quarter fell far short of analyst expectations on both the top and bottom lines. Key figures from the report include:

  • Adjusted Loss Per Share: A surprise loss of -$0.21, compared to analyst expectations of a $1.04 profit.
  • Revenue: $3.68 billion, missing the consensus estimate of approximately $3.97 billion.
  • Net Sales: A year-over-year decline of 8.8%.

Full-Year Outlook Reversed

Compounding the poor quarterly performance, Whirlpool dramatically cut its full-year 2026 forecast, signaling deeper challenges ahead. The company now projects an ongoing earnings per share (EPS) loss of approximately -$1.30 for the full year. This marks a significant reversal from the positive $1.21 EPS that analysts had been modeling.

In addition to the earnings revision, management trimmed its full-year revenue outlook to approximately $14.5 billion.

Multiple Headwinds Pressure Performance

Whirlpool attributed the weak results to several factors, including the bankruptcy reorganization of Grupo Casas Bahia, its largest retail customer in Brazil, which contributed to deeply negative free cash flow. The company also continues to face a challenging market in its home region, with North American major-appliance sales declining by 8.3% amid a sluggish housing market and weak consumer sentiment.

Analyst sentiment was already deteriorating prior to the release. On the day of the earnings report, Stifel Nicolaus cut its price target on the stock, citing weakness in appliance shipment data and accelerating market share losses. This followed a string of recent target reductions from firms including Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Bank of America.
