Background

JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU) shares surged 11.6% in after-hours trading following the release of its third-quarter earnings, staging a dramatic recovery from a record low hit during the regular session amid concerns over the airline's financial stability. The report provided investors with a more optimistic picture than the severe distress priced into the stock earlier in the day.

Earnings Outpace Dire Expectations

The after-hours rally was fueled by third-quarter results that showed operational resilience despite sector-wide headwinds. The airline delivered strong revenue growth and effectively managed rising expenses, according to its earnings release.

Key figures from the report include:

  • Revenue per available seat mile (RASM) grew by 18.4%.
  • The airline recaptured approximately 87% of higher fuel costs during the quarter.

"Resilient demand and strong yields drove revenue well ahead of our initial expectations, allowing us to recapture more of the increase in fuel costs than we initially expected," CEO Joanna Geraghty said in the release. JetBlue also reported year-over-year adjusted operating margin improvement in Q3 and expects further expansion in Q4.

Record Low Hit Amid Restructuring Fears

The relief rally followed a punishing regular session where JetBlue's stock plummeted as much as 18% to an all-time low of $2.16. The sharp sell-off was reportedly triggered by news that a group of the airline’s senior creditors were working with restructuring adviser PJT Partners.

Adding to the pressure, the broader airline sector was weak following an earnings miss and guidance cut from Delta Air Lines. Analyst sentiment was mixed, with Goldman Sachs reiterating a Sell rating, while Citigroup and UBS both upgraded the stock to Neutral from Sell, though they also trimmed their price targets.

Revised Guidance and Future Targets

While the Q3 performance was better than feared, JetBlue did widen its projected full-year operating margin loss. The company now anticipates a loss in the range of -4.5% to -6.5%, a deeper loss than its prior guidance of -2% to -5%.

However, management expressed confidence in its long-term strategy. The airline stated it expects to achieve sustained operating profitability in 2027 and is targeting at least $1 in earnings per share (EPS) and positive free cash flow in 2028. This forward-looking guidance appears to have provided a floor for the stock after the day's steep decline.
