Whirlpool Options Market Signals Strong Bearish Sentiment as Stock Hits 52-Week Low

Whirlpool Corp. (WHR) shares declined to a new 52-week low on Wednesday, accompanied by a surge in bearish options activity that suggests traders are positioning for further weakness. The stock fell as low as $35.45, with put volume outpacing call volume by a ratio of nearly three to one.
Dominant Put Activity
Options market data showed significant conviction from bearish traders, with a total of 6,341 put contracts traded against just 2,148 calls. According to Investing.com, this resulted in a put/call ratio of 2.95.
The bulk of the activity was concentrated in a few key structures:
- $37.50 Put Spreads: Approximately 4,000 contracts were involved in calendar spreads centered on the $37.50 strike price. This type of trade, which involves selling a near-term put and buying a longer-dated one, often indicates a trader is rolling a bearish position forward, maintaining downside exposure through at least early 2027.
- $42.50/$45 Put Spread: Another 1,000 contracts were traded in a spread that profits if Whirlpool's stock remains below $42.50 by its January 2027 expiration. With the stock trading near $36, this position is already profitable.
Volatility Signals Investor Fear
AdMarket indicators for volatility also point to heightened anxiety. The 3-month implied volatility stood at an elevated 58.70%, reflecting the stock's sharp decline over the past year.
More telling is the options skew, which measures the relative demand for puts versus calls. The skew rose to 1.16, signaling that put options are becoming more expensive relative to calls. This often indicates institutional investors are actively hedging against a potential drop in the stock price.
Fundamental Headwinds
The bearish sentiment in the options market is underpinned by a challenging business environment for Whirlpool. The company faces several fundamental pressures, including:
- Weak Earnings: Whirlpool reported a significant miss in its second-quarter 2026 results, with an adjusted earnings per share of -$0.21 against an estimated +$0.08.
- High Leverage: The company's debt leverage is above 5x, with analysts at Wells Fargo not expecting it to fall to its target of 3x until fiscal year 2028.
- Industry Slowdown: Data from Raymond James showed that North American appliance production fell 5.6% year-over-year in July, pointing to softening consumer demand.
