Waymo Launches Public Robotaxi Service in Las Vegas, Challenging Amazon's Zoox

Alphabet's (GOOGL) self-driving technology unit, Waymo, announced on Monday that it will begin offering autonomous vehicle rides to the general public in Las Vegas. The move marks the company's first operational foray into Nevada and a significant step in the expansion of its commercial robotaxi services.
Competitive Landscape
The Las Vegas launch places Waymo in direct competition with Amazon's (AMZN) Zoox, which began its own paid, public robotaxi service in the city last month. Until Waymo's entry, Zoox was the sole operator offering such services in Las Vegas, a key market for transportation and tourism. The move signals growing competition in the autonomous vehicle sector, where companies including Tesla (TSLA) are also vying for market leadership.
Rollout and Technology
According to a Reuters report, Waymo's initial Las Vegas fleet will consist of a few dozen vehicles, with the company planning to scale its operations over time. The service will utilize Waymo's sixth-generation self-driving system.
AdKey details of the Las Vegas service include:
- Vehicle Platform: The robotaxis are the company's "Ojai" model, built on a Zeekr vehicle platform.
- Availability: The service is now open to public riders, moving beyond previous testing phases.
National Expansion Strategy
Las Vegas is the latest addition to Waymo's growing list of operational territories. The company has already established a presence in several other states, including California, Texas, Florida, and Arizona. Earlier this month, Waymo also revealed plans to expand its services into Denver, San Diego, and Tampa, underscoring its aggressive strategy to build a nationwide footprint for its autonomous ride-hailing network.
