Warsaw's WIG30 Index Closes Lower as Energy and Tech Stocks Slide

Poland's benchmark stock index, the WIG30, ended Wednesday's trading session in negative territory, declining by 0.91%. The downturn was driven by broad-based weakness, particularly in the energy, construction, and information technology sectors, according to market data.
Session in Review
The negative sentiment was reflected in the market's breadth, with 310 stocks falling on the Warsaw Stock Exchange compared to 226 advancing companies, while 118 issues ended the day unchanged. The decline pulled the main index lower despite gains in some of its constituent companies.
Among the session's most significant decliners were:
- Enea SA (ENAE), which plummeted 5.44% to close at 21.56.
- Dino Polska SA (DNP), which saw its shares fall 4.20% to 35.80.
- CD PROJEKT SA (CDR), the video game developer, which dropped 2.97% to end at 232.30.
Pockets of Strength
AdDespite the broader market downturn, a few blue-chip stocks posted gains. Media and telecommunications firm Cyfrowy Polsat SA (CPS) was the top performer on the index, rising 1.29%. It was followed by copper and silver producer KGHM Polska Miedz SA (KGH), which added 0.88%.
Notably, oil refiner Polski Koncern Naftowy ORLEN SA (PKN) rose 0.58% to reach an all-time high of 159.52. The advance in Orlen's shares coincided with a rally in global energy markets, as Brent crude for November delivery rose 3.51% to $101.36 a barrel.
Broader Market Context
In the currency markets, the Polish zloty remained relatively stable against major currencies. The EUR/PLN pair was largely unchanged at 4.31, while the USD/PLN pair held steady at 3.71. Elsewhere, commodity markets saw gains, with October crude oil futures rising 3.72% and December gold futures adding 0.15%.
