Warsaw's WIG30 Edges Higher as Oil and Bank Stocks Offset Broader Declines

Summary
Poland's benchmark WIG30 index closed nearly flat on Thursday, gaining just 0.04% as strength in the energy and financial sectors counteracted a larger number of declining stocks on the Warsaw exchange.
Poland's benchmark WIG30 index finished Thursday's trading session nearly unchanged, posting a marginal gain of 0.04% as strength in key sectors helped offset a broader market decline. The slight uptick was supported by positive performance in the Oil & Gas, Banking, and Construction industries.
A Divided Market
Despite the headline index finishing in positive territory, market breadth on the Warsaw Stock Exchange was negative. Data from the close showed that falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones by a margin of 293 to 222, with 111 issues ending the session unchanged. This indicates that the modest gain in the WIG30 was driven by heavyweight index components rather than widespread market optimism.
Top Movers
The session's leading performers on the WIG30 included:
- Enea SA (ENAE), which climbed 2.43%.
- Polski Koncern Naftowy ORLEN SA (PKN), adding 1.34%.
- Allegro (ALEP), which rose 1.31%.
AdConversely, the biggest decliners were led by coal producer Jastrzebska Spotka Weglowa SA (JSW), which fell 5.58%. It was followed by MODIVO SA (MDVP), down 4.23%, and utility PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA (PGE), which lost 3.15%.
Commodity and Currency Context
Thursday's session saw a significant rally in energy markets, which likely supported gains in Polish oil and gas stocks. Crude oil futures for November delivery surged 4.52% to settle at $96.33 a barrel, while Brent oil futures rose 4.65% to $107.87 a barrel.
In foreign exchange markets, the Polish Zloty weakened against major currencies. The EUR/PLN pair rose 0.30% to 4.38, while the USD/PLN pair gained 0.42% to 3.86, according to market data.
