Walmex Trims Full-Year Outlook as Q2 Profit Slips on Weaker Consumer Spending

Walmart de México y Centroamérica (Walmex) reported a slight decline in second-quarter net profit and has revised its financial outlook for the full year, citing pressure from weakening consumer spending. The announcement signals potential economic headwinds for the region's largest retailer.
Second-Quarter Performance
According to its earnings report released Wednesday, Walmex posted a net profit that fell marginally from the prior year, alongside revenue that missed analyst consensus.
- Net Profit: 11.15 billion pesos ($637.2 million), a decrease of 0.7% from 11.23 billion pesos in the same period last year.
- Revenue: Increased 1.9% to 250.95 billion pesos ($14.3 billion), just shy of analyst estimates of 251 billion pesos.
Revised Annual Outlook
AdIn response to observed consumer behavior in the first half of the year, Walmex has lowered its full-year guidance. The company now anticipates softer growth and tighter margins than previously expected.
"Based on the consumer trends we have observed during the first half of the year, we are revising our outlook for the full year," the company stated in its report. Walmex now projects full-year sales growth of 3.5% to 4.5% in constant currency and expects its EBITDA margin to be slightly below the level recorded last year.
Market Implications
The revised forecast from Walmex, a bellwether for consumer health in Mexico and Central America, suggests that shoppers are becoming more cautious. This could indicate broader economic pressure on household budgets, a key factor for investors monitoring the retail sector and regional economic trends.
