Background

Wall Street analysts made several notable rating changes this week, upgrading shares of companies across the telecommunications, renewable energy, and oil sectors. The calls from firms including BofA Securities and Deutsche Bank often pointed to attractive valuations following recent stock price declines and company-specific fundamental strengths.

Key Analyst Upgrades

T-Mobile US (TMUS)

BofA Securities upgraded T-Mobile to Buy from Neutral on Monday, maintaining a $220 price target. The firm argued that the market has overreacted to competitive threats, particularly from emerging low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband services.

According to the bank's analysis, T-Mobile is well-insulated from these threats due to its dominant market share in dense urban areas, where LEO signals face significant limitations. BofA also noted that T-Mobile's low-priced legacy plans provide it with significant pricing flexibility to drive growth in postpaid average revenue per account (ARPA).

First Solar (FSLR)

On Tuesday, Deutsche Bank raised its rating on First Solar to Buy, setting a $272 price target. The upgrade followed a 27% collapse in the company's stock price since June 1, which the bank believes has created a mispriced entry point for investors.

Deutsche Bank highlighted First Solar's strong financial position, including a $2.1 billion net cash cushion. The firm noted the stock trades at just 7x its 2027 estimated EV/EBITDA, a steep discount compared to the clean-tech sector average of 15x. Analysts expect this valuation gap to narrow as regulatory certainty around tariffs improves.

Occidental Petroleum (OXY)

Evercore upgraded Occidental Petroleum to Outperform on Wednesday with a $65 price target. The firm's thesis centers on a structural improvement in capital efficiency and a de-levered balance sheet, which it believes will fundamentally reshape the company's free-cash-flow profile.

While not positioned as a high-growth investment, Evercore sees a "rate-of-change" opportunity as the market has yet to fully price in OXY's efficiency gains. These improvements are expected to support the restart of a stock buyback program by late 2028.

Consumer and Housing Sectors Also in Focus

Other notable calls this week targeted the consumer discretionary and homebuilding sectors:

  • Five Below (FIVE): Mizuho upgraded the discount retailer to Outperform with a $220 price target, arguing that a recent 30% drop in its share price was an overreaction. The firm pointed to strong underlying store economics and effective social media engagement as key drivers.
  • Toll Brothers (TOL): Citi upgraded the luxury homebuilder to Buy with a $176 price target ahead of the upcoming earnings season. The bank is betting on the company's focus on the affluent market to insulate it from broader housing affordability challenges, highlighting its attractive valuation at just 1.3x its forward price-to-tangible-book-value.
