Volvo Cars Launches Longer-Range XC60 and XC90 Hybrid SUVs

Summary
Volvo Cars has launched upgraded versions of its XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrid models for European and American markets, featuring significantly extended electric-only ranges to bridge its transition to a fully electric lineup.
Volvo Cars announced on Tuesday the launch of new, longer-range plug-in hybrid versions of its popular XC60 and XC90 SUVs. The updated models, available in European and American markets, feature significantly improved electric-only driving capabilities, marking a key step in the automaker's broader electrification strategy.
Upgraded Powertrain Technology
The substantial increase in electric range is due to a new powertrain configuration that includes a larger-capacity battery and a more powerful electric motor, the Sweden-based company said. According to Volvo, the new variants offer an electric range more than two and a half times longer than that of the models they replace.
- The new hybrid XC60 variant has an electric-only range of up to 200 kilometers (approximately 124 miles).
- The new hybrid XC90 version offers an electric-only range of up to 160 kilometers (approximately 99 miles).
Volvo Cars, which is majority-owned by China’s Geely Holding, confirmed that both SUV models will also remain available as mild hybrids.
AdStrategic Importance for Electrification
The automaker framed the launch as a critical component of its move toward becoming an all-electric car manufacturer. "These long-range hybrids are a key part of Volvo Cars’ bridge to a fully electric future," the company said in a statement.
For the market, these enhanced plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) strengthen Volvo's competitive position in the premium SUV segment. The extended range directly addresses consumer demand for more electric driving in daily use without the range anxiety associated with pure battery-electric vehicles, potentially attracting buyers still hesitant to make a full EV transition.
