Background

Shares of Vicor Corporation (NASDAQ:VICR) jumped more than 10% after the power component manufacturer announced plans to significantly expand its production capacity by building two new semiconductor fabrication facilities in New Hampshire.

Expansion Details

Vicor stated it is acquiring two separate sites to support the construction of what it calls ChiP Fab-2 and Fab-3. The company noted that its existing facility, ChiP Fab-1 in Andover, Massachusetts, is approaching full utilization.

The new locations include:

  • A 334,000-square-foot building on 66 acres in Merrimack, New Hampshire.
  • A separate acquisition of 54 acres in Hooksett, New Hampshire.

Together, the new fabs will have a combined footprint of nearly one million square feet, a substantial increase over the 320,000-square-foot Andover facility. Vicor said it expects an initial deployment lead time of one year for Fab-2.

Strategic Rationale

The expansion is designed to support growing demand from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and hyperscalers that require advanced power delivery solutions for artificial intelligence applications. According to the company, the move also addresses customer needs for U.S.-based sourcing and what it termed "Freedom to Operate."

Vicor referenced past instances where some computing systems were banned from importation due to infringing power suppliers, positioning its domestic expansion as a key strategic advantage for its customers. The company designs and manufactures modular power components and systems from its headquarters in Andover, Massachusetts.
