Background

Vantage Markets, a multi-asset broker, announced the launch of a new contract for difference (CFD) product enabling 24/7 trading on gold. The instrument, `XAUUSD247`, provides eligible clients with continuous market access to the precious metal, including over weekends when traditional markets are closed.

Product Details

According to the company's announcement on July 4, the new over-the-counter (OTC) product is available on the MT5 and TradingView platforms, as well as the Vantage App. It is designed to give traders the ability to react to market-moving news and events that occur outside of the standard trading week.

Key features of the `XAUUSD247` product include:

  • Contract Size: One ounce, which is smaller than the broker's traditional 100-ounce XAUUSD contract.
  • Leverage: Tiered leverage of up to 100x may be available, subject to account type and position size.
  • Costs: No separate trading commission is applied, though spreads and financing charges are applicable.
  • Risk Management: The product includes net and gross exposure limits at the account level. Reaching these thresholds places an account into a "close-only" mode.

"XAUUSD247 provides eligible clients with access to gold CFDs beyond standard market hours, supported by transparent product mechanics and clearly defined trading controls," said Marc Despallieres, Chief Executive Officer at Vantage.

Market Context and Implications

The introduction of continuous gold CFD trading by Vantage comes as major exchanges also explore extended hours. CME Group recently announced its own plans to expand trading for certain gold futures products to a 24/7 schedule, pending regulatory review. Vantage clarified that its offering is a separate OTC CFD product.

For investors, the availability of weekend trading allows for managing positions or speculating on geopolitical or economic news that breaks on a Saturday or Sunday. However, trading during periods of traditionally lower liquidity, such as weekends, can sometimes result in wider spreads and increased volatility.

CFDs are complex, leveraged instruments that carry a high degree of risk. The significant leverage available can amplify both profits and losses, and traders should be aware that they can lose their capital rapidly.
