U.S. Bancorp Revenue Hits Record High on Loan Growth and BTIG Acquisition

Summary
U.S. Bancorp reported record quarterly revenue of $7.71 billion, a 10.1% year-over-year increase, driven by strong loan growth and a significant boost in fee income following its acquisition of investment bank BTIG.
U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB) announced record quarterly revenue on Thursday, as robust growth in its loan portfolio and a strategic acquisition in capital markets propelled the bank's performance. The fifth-largest U.S. commercial bank saw its total net revenue climb 10.1% to $7.71 billion for the second quarter, according to its latest earnings release.
Core Banking Strength
The bank's traditional lending operations showed significant momentum. Net interest income (NII)—the difference between what a bank earns on loans and pays on deposits—rose 7.7% from the prior year to $4.36 billion. This increase was underpinned by a 7.1% growth in average loans, with notable strength in commercial, credit card, and commercial real estate lending.
In a statement, CEO Gunjan Kedia also highlighted the third consecutive quarter of record consumer deposits and improving credit quality, signaling a healthy foundation for the bank's core business.
BTIG Acquisition Fuels Fee Income
Fee-based revenue streams provided a substantial lift, with total fee revenue jumping 13.2% to $3.37 billion. A key driver was the bank's recent acquisition of investment bank BTIG, which was finalized in June.
AdThe integration of BTIG, along with higher fees from corporate bond underwriting and client-related derivative activity, caused capital markets revenue to surge 62.5% to $512 million for the quarter. The deal, valued at up to $1 billion, significantly bolsters U.S. Bancorp's presence in the capital markets space.
The Bottom Line
The strong performance across both interest and fee-based income translated directly to the bottom line, with profit attributable to the company rising 20% to $2.18 billion. The second-quarter results demonstrate strength in the bank's core lending business, complemented by a successful strategic expansion.
Key financial highlights from the quarter include:
- Total Net Revenue: $7.71 billion (+10.1% YoY)
- Net Interest Income: $4.36 billion (+7.7% YoY)
- Total Fee Revenue: $3.37 billion (+13.2% YoY)
