UPS Targets $15 Billion Annual Revenue Opportunity from AI Data Center Boom

United Parcel Service (UPS) is targeting a $15 billion annual revenue opportunity by providing logistics for the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence data center industry, according to CEO Carol Tome. In an interview with Reuters, Tome described the boom as a "decades-long opportunity" that fits squarely within the company's strategy to boost profitability by focusing on more premium shipments.
The Data Center Opportunity
The explosive growth in AI is fueling massive investments from tech giants like Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon, with global data center spending estimated to reach approximately $1 trillion in 2026 and more than double by the end of the decade, according to the report. Tome stated that the logistics opportunity associated with building and maintaining these facilities is significant.
UPS's role extends across the entire supply chain, which Tome described as a service "from manufacturing floor to front door." This includes:
- Air-freighting critical components like advanced microprocessors.
- Arranging ocean shipments for larger equipment.
- Warehousing goods and delivering parts directly to project sites.
Even after the initial construction phase, Tome noted that there will be continuous demand for parts and equipment to maintain operations, reinforcing the long-term nature of the revenue stream.
AdA 'Better, Not Bigger' Strategy
This focus on data centers is a key component of Tome's "better, not bigger" growth strategy, which prioritizes high-margin business segments over sheer volume. The company has been reconfiguring its network to be more profitable, shedding low-margin deliveries, such as certain packages for Amazon, to improve its financial performance.
While the data center business is growing rapidly, it has not yet reached the scale of UPS's healthcare logistics segment. The healthcare division, a major focus of the high-margin strategy, generated $3 billion in the most recent quarter and is forecast to reach $13 billion in revenue this year. Tome's comments followed UPS's decision to raise its annual revenue and profit forecasts after reporting better-than-expected third-quarter earnings.
Competitive Landscape
UPS is not the only logistics provider eyeing this lucrative market. Rival FedEx has also established a dedicated team to pursue data center-related business as both companies pivot away from less profitable e-commerce deliveries. Tome asserted that UPS has moved through an "important inflection point" and that its profit margins would continue to improve annually.
