Seagate Stock Falls Despite Strong Q1 Earnings and Upbeat Outlook

Seagate Technology Holdings plc (NASDAQ: STX) shares fell approximately 6% in trading despite the data storage company reporting first-quarter financial results that beat Wall Street estimates and issuing an optimistic forecast for the current quarter. The decline appeared to be driven by investors taking profits following a recent run-up in the stock's value.
Quarterly Results Exceed Expectations
Seagate announced adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $7.68 for its fiscal first quarter, surpassing the analyst consensus of $7.39. Revenue for the period came in at $4.2 billion, which was ahead of the expected $4.13 billion and marked a significant 61% increase from the $2.6 billion reported in the same quarter last year.
The company also demonstrated substantial improvements in operational efficiency. According to the report, Seagate's adjusted gross margin expanded to 57.8%, a sharp increase from 40.1% in the prior-year period. Its adjusted operating margin grew to 50.7% from 29.0% a year ago, reflecting record profitability.
Strong Guidance and Financial Health
Looking ahead, Seagate provided a second-quarter outlook that was well above analyst projections. The company expects Q2 adjusted EPS to be in the range of $9.00 to $9.40, with its midpoint of $9.20 easily clearing the consensus estimate of $8.61. Revenue is forecast to be between $4.7 billion and $4.9 billion, with the midpoint sitting well above the $4.56 billion consensus.
Ad"Seagate delivered another quarter of record profitability and our highest ever free cash flow in the September quarter, demonstrating the earnings power of our business amid a strengthening demand environment," said Dave Mosley, Seagate’s chair and chief executive officer.
Capital Allocation and Shareholder Returns
The company highlighted its strong financial position and commitment to returning capital to shareholders. Key financial metrics from the quarter include:
- Generation of $1.5 billion in free cash flow.
- Repayment of $1.2 billion in debt, with an additional $750 million retired after the quarter's end, reducing gross debt to $1.6 billion.
- A return of $568 million to investors through a combination of dividends and share repurchases.
In a further sign of confidence, Seagate's board of directors approved an approximate 3% increase to its quarterly cash dividend, raising it to $0.76 per share.
