UPM-Kymmene Shares Fall as Fibres Division Miss Overshadows Profit Beat

Shares of UPM-Kymmene Oyj fell more than 6% on Tuesday after the company's half-year 2026 financial report presented a mixed picture that investors ultimately viewed as a disappointment. The stock's decline was primarily driven by a significant performance shortfall in its Fibres division, which overshadowed a group-level profit beat.
A Tale of Two Divisions
While UPM's second-quarter adjusted EBITDA came in approximately 2% above consensus estimates, the underlying details caused concern. The positive result was supported by improved unit costs in the Communication Papers segment, which benefited from lower energy prices in Finland on a sequential basis.
However, the market focused on the Fibres division, which missed earnings expectations by roughly 9% due to higher-than-expected costs. This miss in a core segment raised questions about the sustainability of the company's full-year profitability and triggered a broad-based sell-off.
Market and Operational Pressures
Investor reaction was amplified by a backdrop of pre-existing caution. According to Investing.com, analysts had already been trimming their price targets on UPM ahead of the report, signaling growing concerns about the industry environment.
AdOperational headwinds also weighed on sentiment. The company had previously announced temporary production shutdowns at its Kaukas and Pietarsaari pulp mills to manage output and protect margins. This context made the Fibres segment's cost issues particularly alarming for investors.
Broader market weakness contributed to the negative move, with the local OMX Helsinki benchmark index trading lower. Pressure was also seen across the sector, with peer Stora Enso also trading down, reflecting wider challenges for the Nordic forest industry.
Stock Performance
In response to the earnings report, UPM-Kymmene stock fell 6.7%, touching a session low of €22.37. The move pushed the share price closer to its 52-week low of €21.72, reflecting significant investor anxiety about the company's forward-looking performance.
