UK's FTSE 100 Slips to One-Month Low as Mining Stocks Tumble

London's main stock index closed in negative territory on Thursday, hitting a new one-month low as weakness in commodity-linked shares and food producers weighed on the market. The benchmark FTSE 100 index finished the session down 0.56%, according to data from Investing.com.
Sector Pressures Drive Decline
The day's losses were concentrated in several key sectors, with Industrial Metals & Mining, broader Mining, and Food Producers leading the descent. Market breadth on the London Stock Exchange was negative, with 1,004 stocks falling compared to 693 advancers, while 554 stocks ended the day unchanged.
The session's worst performers on the index included:
- Associated British Foods PLC (LON:ABF), which plunged 7.92%.
- Antofagasta PLC (LON:ANTO), a major copper producer, which declined 5.68%.
- Anglo American PLC (LON:AAL), which fell 4.86%.
Defensive Stocks Buck the Trend
AdDespite the broader market downturn, some defensive names posted gains, suggesting a flight to safety among some investors. Tobacco giants Imperial Brands PLC (LON:IMB) and British American Tobacco PLC (LON:BATS) rose 1.84% and 1.54%, respectively.
Vodafone Group PLC (LON:VOD) also performed well, adding 1.46% to reach a new three-year high. These gains, however, were insufficient to offset the heavy selling pressure in the materials and consumer staples sectors.
Commodity and Currency Markets
In the wider markets, commodities saw a mixed performance. Gold futures for December delivery fell 1.27%. In contrast, energy prices surged, with October Crude oil futures jumping 5.68% and the November Brent contract rising 5.55%.
Currency markets were relatively stable. The GBP/USD pair was little changed, while the US Dollar Index Futures, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, edged up 0.14%.
