UK's FTSE 100 Gains on Strength in Mining and Banking Sectors

Sector Strength Drives Gains
The advance was led by strong performance in basic materials and financial stocks. Gains in the Mining, Industrial Metals & Mining, and Banking sectors provided the primary lift for the broader market, the data showed.
Market breadth on the London Stock Exchange was positive, with 959 stocks rising compared to 723 decliners, while 580 shares ended the session unchanged.
Among the top individual performers on the index were:
- Antofagasta PLC (LON:ANTO): +5.83%
- Marks and Spencer Group PLC (LON:MKS): +4.84%
- Fresnillo PLC (LON:FRES): +4.44%
AdOn the downside, advertising group WPP PLC (LON:WPP) was the session's biggest laggard, falling 4.35%. It was followed by Segro Plc (LON:SGRO) and Flutter Entertainment PLC (LON:FLTRF), which declined 3.49% and 3.01%, respectively.
Commodities Rise, Pound Falters
The rally in mining stocks like Antofagasta and Fresnillo coincided with a broad rise in commodity prices. Gold Futures for August delivery climbed 1.64% to $4,081.57 a troy ounce.
Energy markets also saw notable gains. September contracts for Crude oil rose 2.17% to $84.27 a barrel, while the international benchmark Brent oil contract gained 2.07% to trade at $91.07 a barrel.
In foreign exchange markets, the British pound weakened against a stronger U.S. dollar. The GBP/USD pair fell 0.48% to 1.34, while the US Dollar Index Futures, which measures the greenback against a basket of major currencies, was up 0.17%.
