UK's FTSE 100 Ends Flat as Mining Rally Offsets AstraZeneca Plunge

Summary
The UK's benchmark stock index closed nearly unchanged on Thursday, as a strong performance from major mining companies was counteracted by a steep sell-off in heavyweight healthcare and defensive stocks.
London's primary stock index closed Thursday's session almost perfectly flat, finishing down a marginal 0.06% in a day of sharp contrasts between sectors. A significant rally in mining and materials stocks was ultimately cancelled out by heavy losses in key healthcare and tobacco names, according to data from Investing.com.
Healthcare and Defensives Drag
The session's negative pressure came primarily from the Pharmaceuticals & Biotech and Tobacco sectors. The most significant individual weight on the index was pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca PLC (LON:AZN), which saw its shares plunge 6.22% by the close.
Other major companies also faced selling pressure. Shares in defense contractor BAE Systems PLC (LON:BAES) declined by 4.47%, while British American Tobacco PLC (LON:BATS) fell 2.47%.
Mining Stocks Provide Support
In stark contrast, the materials sector delivered a strong performance, preventing a broader market decline. Several of the day's top-performing companies on the index were major miners:
Ad- Anglo American PLC (LON:AAL) was the top gainer, surging 5.83%.
- Antofagasta PLC (LON:ANTO) followed closely, climbing 5.36%.
- Glencore PLC (LON:GLEN) also posted a robust gain of 4.23%.
Broader Market and Commodities
Despite the benchmark index's flat finish, overall market breadth on the London Stock Exchange was positive, with 997 stocks rising versus 693 falling. This indicates that the index's performance was heavily influenced by the negative moves in a few of its largest constituents.
In the commodities market, energy prices softened, with the September Brent oil contract falling 1.86% to $76.57 a barrel. Conversely, August Gold Futures rose 1.36%, providing a potential tailwind for precious metals producers.
