UBS Favors New Zealand Dollar on Hawkish RBNZ Rate Hike

UBS strategists are maintaining an attractive view on the New Zealand dollar (NZD) following a key interest rate decision by the country's central bank. In a research note, the investment bank highlighted the currency's potential, particularly for investors seeking to diversify away from the U.S. dollar.
RBNZ Delivers First Hike in Three Years
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) raised its official cash rate by 25 basis points to 2.50%, a move that was in line with consensus market expectations. This marks the first time the central bank has tightened monetary policy in three years.
In its statement, the RBNZ assessed that current policy settings remain accommodative. The central bank signaled that further rate increases will likely be necessary to guide inflation back toward the 2% midpoint of its target range.
UBS Investment Thesis
In response to the RBNZ's hawkish stance, UBS recommends that investors hold the New Zealand dollar on an unhedged basis. The bank also favors a specific currency pair trade, initiating a short position on the Australian dollar versus the New Zealand dollar (AUD/NZD).
AdKey details of the UBS recommendation include:
- Position: Short AUD/NZD
- Target: 1.18
- Stop-loss: 1.24
Market Outlook
The RBNZ's commitment to curbing inflation through higher interest rates provides fundamental support for the NZD. Higher domestic rates can attract foreign capital, increasing demand for the currency. Looking ahead, UBS analysts expect the central bank to deliver its next rate hike as soon as September.
