UBS Favors New Zealand Dollar Following RBNZ Rate Hike

UBS maintains a favorable view on the New Zealand dollar (NZD) in its global foreign exchange strategy, according to a recent research note. The investment bank's position follows a decision by New Zealand's central bank to raise its benchmark interest rate for the first time in three years.
RBNZ Delivers Expected Rate Hike
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) increased its official cash rate by 25 basis points to 2.50%. The move was widely anticipated and met consensus market expectations.
In its accompanying statement, the RBNZ noted that current policy settings remain accommodative. The central bank signaled that further monetary tightening will likely be necessary to guide inflation back toward the 2% midpoint of its target range, a hawkish stance that suggests more rate increases are forthcoming.
UBS Strategy and Outlook
AdIn light of the RBNZ's policy direction, UBS recommends that investors looking to diversify their holdings away from the U.S. dollar should consider holding the New Zealand dollar on an unhedged basis. The bank's analysts anticipate the RBNZ will deliver its next rate hike in September.
Furthermore, UBS stated a preference for a short position in the Australian dollar versus the New Zealand dollar (AUD/NZD). The bank's specific trade recommendation includes:
- A target of 1.18
- A stop-loss level of 1.24
This position suggests an expectation that the New Zealand dollar will outperform its Australian counterpart, likely driven by the RBNZ's more aggressive path toward policy normalization.
