TSX Futures Hold Steady as Soaring Oil Prices Counteract Global Tech Sell-Off

Futures for Canada's S&P/TSX Composite index were flat Monday morning, as a surge in crude oil prices provided a critical buffer against a wider global equity sell-off driven by geopolitical tensions and a rout in technology stocks. S&P/TSX 60 index standard futures were unchanged at 2,087.10 points, according to early session data from Investing.com.
Geopolitical Tensions Drive Oil Surge
The primary catalyst for market volatility was an escalation of hostilities in the Middle East over the weekend. Reports of missile and drone exchanges and a subsequent, albeit disputed, claim from Tehran that it had closed the vital Strait of Hormuz shipping lane roiled energy markets.
While U.S. Central Command asserted the passage remains open, the perceived threat to global supply chains sent oil prices sharply higher. Brent crude, the international benchmark, jumped 4.4% to trade at $79.36 per barrel.
Diverging Sector Performance
The spike in energy prices provided significant support for the resource-heavy Canadian index, where oil, gas, and mining sectors have a substantial weighting. Higher crude prices typically boost the valuations of major Canadian energy producers like Suncor Energy and Canadian Natural Resources, as well as pipeline operators such as Enbridge.
AdHowever, potential gains in the energy sector were largely offset by weakness in technology stocks. The pressure on names like Shopify mirrored overnight trading in Asian and European markets, where semiconductor and other high-growth stocks fell amid concerns over elevated valuations.
Broader Market Context
The stability in TSX futures contrasted with declines in U.S. markets. Futures for the S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq were both trading lower ahead of the opening bell, reflecting the global risk-off sentiment.
This divergence highlights the TSX's unique composition, where strength in commodities can insulate the broader index from global downturns that heavily impact technology and other growth-oriented sectors.
