Background

Futures contracts for Canada's main stock index pointed to a lower open on Thursday as investors awaited key U.S. inflation data that is expected to heavily influence the Federal Reserve's next interest rate decision. Elevated oil prices amid geopolitical tensions also contributed to a cautious market tone.

Market Snapshot

By 07:12 ET, the S&P/TSX 60 index futures contract had fallen 0.3%, or 5 points, according to Investing.com. The move follows a down day for the Canadian market, with the benchmark S&P/TSX Composite Index closing 0.6% lower on Wednesday at 35,906.56, its lowest level since September 1.

U.S. stock futures showed a mixed picture ahead of the New York open. Dow futures posted a modest gain of 0.2%, while S&P 500 futures were largely unchanged. In contrast, Nasdaq 100 futures declined by 0.4%, reflecting pressure on technology stocks from rising bond yields.

Inflation and Oil Prices in Focus

Investor attention is firmly fixed on upcoming U.S. economic reports, starting with Thursday's Producer Price Index (PPI) and followed by the more closely watched Consumer Price Index (CPI) on Friday. These inflation indicators are critical inputs for the Federal Reserve, with markets currently pricing in approximately a 60% probability of a rate hike at the conclusion of the central bank's September meeting.

Adding to inflation concerns is a renewed surge in energy prices. The international benchmark Brent crude contract surpassed $102 a barrel on Thursday, driven by escalating U.S.-Iran hostilities that have raised fears of supply disruptions. Persistently high energy costs could complicate the Fed's efforts to control inflation.

Bond Yields and Commodities

The yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note has also been a source of pressure for equities, touching its highest level since November 2023 on Wednesday at 4.85% before easing slightly. Higher bond yields make stocks less attractive by comparison and increase borrowing costs for companies.

In commodities, gold prices were volatile. Spot gold fell 0.4% to $4,387.55 an ounce, as support from a softer U.S. dollar was offset by the pressure from high Treasury yields, according to the source.
