Background

Futures for Canada's main stock index posted modest gains Wednesday morning as investors balanced a rebound in technology shares with escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a slate of crucial corporate earnings.

By 07:13 ET, the S&P/TSX 60 index standard futures contract had risen by 5 points, or approximately 0.3%, according to Investing.com. The move follows a positive session on Tuesday, where the benchmark S&P/TSX Composite Index climbed 1.2% to close at 35,369.08, ending a three-day losing streak.

Tech Earnings and Geopolitics Drive Sentiment

Investor focus is split between major U.S. corporate earnings and global conflicts. After the bell, reports are due from Google-parent Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL), chipmaker Texas Instruments (NASDAQ:TXN), and electric vehicle firm Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA). Alphabet's results will be closely watched for details on its artificial intelligence spending, which is a key driver for the broader tech sector.

According to LSEG research cited by Reuters, earnings for S&P 500 chip companies are forecast to jump by 133% year-over-year in the second quarter, highlighting the sector's importance to overall market performance.

Meanwhile, escalating military strikes between the U.S. and Iran are impacting commodity markets. Fears of supply disruptions have pushed the global oil benchmark Brent crude above $95 a barrel for the first time since June 11, raising concerns about a potential resurgence in global inflation. The tensions have also supported safe-haven assets, with spot gold rising 1.0% to $4,117.36 an ounce, a two-week high.

Trade and Policy Headwinds

Adding to market uncertainty are renewed trade concerns following a threat of new U.S. tariffs on Canada from President Donald Trump. Prime Minister Mark Carney said he and Trump spoke Tuesday and agreed to intensify trade discussions, the source material reported.

Investors are also looking ahead to the Federal Reserve's policy meeting next week. While the U.S. central bank is expected to hold interest rates steady, persistent inflation risks driven by energy costs could prompt officials to reinforce a "higher-for-longer" message on monetary policy.
