Tesla Shares Rebound on Positive Goldman Sachs Note on Cybercab Economics

Tesla (TSLA) shares rallied in midday trading, climbing 3.8% while the broader market declined, after a positive research note from Goldman Sachs highlighted the potential long-term economic advantages of the company's planned Cybercab robotaxi service.
Goldman Highlights Cost Advantage
In a note to clients, Goldman Sachs analyst Mark Delaney projected that Tesla's Cybercab could achieve a significant cost advantage over competitors like Alphabet's Waymo. The analysis suggests Tesla's operating cost per mile could be $0.05 to $0.30 lower, attributed to its camera-only sensor system and low-cost vehicle design.
Delaney emphasized that while manufacturing is a factor, the ultimate valuation driver for the robotaxi business will be the scalability of its software. Despite the positive commentary on the Cybercab's unit economics, Goldman Sachs maintained its "Hold" rating and $360 price target on Tesla stock. The note's optimistic take was enough to attract new buyers and reverse recent negative sentiment.
Rebound From Recent Weakness
The analyst note provided a much-needed catalyst for the stock, which had fallen nearly 6% on the previous Friday. That sell-off was driven by what investors widely viewed as a disappointing Cybercab launch event in Austin, Texas, and news of a federal safety review into nearly 1,000 of the vehicles.
AdInvestor confidence was also bolstered by the news that Tesla's autonomous fleet has now surpassed 1 million unsupervised miles driven. This milestone, combined with Goldman's endorsement, helped the stock recover from what some traders saw as an oversold condition, pushing its price back into the $367 to $368 range.
Regulatory and Expansion Tailwinds
Adding to the positive momentum, Tesla secured regulatory approval for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system in Slovenia, the sixth European nation to authorize the technology. A broader, EU-level approval vote is potentially scheduled for October 6, 2026.
Furthermore, Tesla announced plans for a Cybercab exhibition tour in four Asian cities this month, signaling its global ambitions for the vehicle. These developments reinforce the market narrative of an accelerating international expansion for Tesla's autonomous driving and robotaxi businesses, amplifying the optimism generated by the Goldman Sachs report.
