Background

Digital asset infrastructure provider Taurus has completed its integration with Swift's shared ledger for blockchain, with the first clients expected to go live within days, according to a report from Investing.com. This development marks a significant step in connecting traditional financial institutions to the growing field of tokenized assets.

A Gateway to Tokenization

The Geneva-based company has connected its tokenization and custody platforms, Taurus-CAPITAL and Taurus-PROTECT, with Swift's smart contract capabilities on clients' permissioned blockchain infrastructures. The first on-ledger transactions are anticipated to be completed within the next few weeks.

This integration provides Swift member banks with an accelerated pathway into the tokenized collateral market, removing the need to build complex infrastructure from scratch. For institutions already using Taurus for digital asset custody and issuance, the connection can reportedly be established in a matter of days.

How the Shared Ledger Functions

A core design feature of the Swift shared ledger is to keep tokenized collateral on the banks' own balance sheets, rather than creating a new form of money to replace commercial bank currency. This is a critical distinction for institutions closely watching the role of stablecoins in cross-border payments.

Under this model, bank-issued collateral remains on each institution's proprietary ledger. Swift's role is to coordinate the flow of funds between participants, including during overnight and weekend periods, before final settlement occurs. The ledger does not change Swift's function as a messaging network; settlement continues to be processed through existing mechanisms like real-time gross settlement (RTGS) systems.

Context and Background

Swift officially announced its shared ledger initiative at the 2025 Sibos conference. The project was designed in collaboration with over 40 financial institutions and advanced from concept to launch in nine months.

Currently, a pilot program for tokenized collateral transactions is underway with 17 early-adopter institutions. The integration by firms like Taurus is a key step in broadening access and operationalizing the network for the wider banking community.
