AMSTERDAM – Prosecutors in the Netherlands have initiated a criminal case against the Dutch arm of Tata Steel, alleging the company intentionally and unlawfully polluted the environment. The charges stem from operations at its large steel manufacturing plant in IJmuiden, located on the Dutch coast west of Amsterdam.
The public prosecutor's office stated that a criminal investigation indicated the company failed to take adequate measures to prevent hazardous pollution. Specific accusations include insufficient maintenance of a coke oven and operating without the necessary licenses. It remains undetermined whether individual executives will also face prosecution.
In response, Tata Steel's Dutch division expressed disagreement with the accusations, calling the legal action "unnecessary." The company asserted that it has made significant improvements in recent years to limit pollution and that the case pertains to a "limited" number of incidents that have since been addressed.
AdThe IJmuiden plant is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases in the Netherlands. According to government-commissioned research, it has been linked to a range of health issues in the surrounding region. In 2024, Dutch regulators had threatened to shut down one of the plant's main coke ovens for reportedly operating in breach of environmental regulations.
A first hearing in the case is scheduled for November 20 at the district court in Amsterdam.
