Background

Shares of life sciences investment firm Syncona (LSE: SYNC) surged 7.4% on Thursday after its portfolio company, Beacon Therapeutics, announced that its gene therapy for a rare inherited eye disease met the primary goal in a pivotal clinical trial. The positive result marks a significant milestone for the treatment and what Syncona described as a "material NAV event" for its investment.

Pivotal Trial Success

Beacon Therapeutics reported that its Phase II/III VISTA trial for the gene therapy laru-zova achieved its primary endpoint with statistical significance at the 12-month mark, according to a Regulatory News Service filing. The trial evaluated the treatment for X-linked retinitis pigmentosa (XLRP), a leading cause of blindness in young men.

This is the first pivotal trial for XLRP ever to successfully meet its primary endpoint. Key results from the trial include:

  • A 31.0% responder rate in the high-dose patient group.
  • A 24.1% responder rate in the low-dose patient group.

The endpoint, which was endorsed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), measured improvement in low-luminance visual acuity.

The successful outcome represents a "key value inflection point" for Beacon, according to the announcement. Syncona holds a 38.4% stake in the company, which was valued at £183.4 million in its portfolio as of June 30, 2026, prior to these results.

Following the positive data, Beacon confirmed it will initiate pre-submission discussions with global regulatory authorities. The company plans to begin a rolling Biologics License Application (BLA) submission with the FDA later this year, a critical step toward potential commercialization.

Market Reaction and Outlook

Syncona's stock reacted sharply to the news, reaching an intraday 52-week high of 120.2p. The gain contrasted with the broader UK market, where the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 indices both finished lower on the day.

Investors will be looking for more comprehensive information on the trial. Beacon Therapeutics is scheduled to present the full data at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting on October 10.
